THE often-secret rituals and practices of Freemasonry were on public display in Newcastle over the weekend.
Delegates from Australia and New Zealand converged on the city.
About 250 people attended social and ceremonial events for the United Supreme Grand Chapter of Mark and Royal Arch Masons of NSW and ACT.
At City Hall on Saturday, Freemasons dressed in regalia attended proceedings for the reinstallation of the chapter’s leader.
Known as the first grand principal and grand master, Edward Keenahan was endorsed, along with officers.
‘‘They’re coming to pay respects to the first grand principal and grand master,’’ grand scribe ezra, or secretary of the order, Frank Syaranamual, said. ‘‘He’s been re-elected for the next 12 months.’’
Freemasonry is a fraternal organisation that promotes moral and personal development among its members, and is involved in charity and community service activities.
It exists all over the world and makes symbolic use of practices and implements of guilds from the Middle Ages.
Freemasonry is often called a secret society, but many Freemasons say it is more an esoteric society, in that aspects are private.
Mr Syaranamual said the weekend was designed to take proceedings out of the chapter’s Sydney headquarters.
